Materials and Electrochemical Systems for a Carbon-Neutral Energy Future

Sustainable Electrochemical Systems Lab (SESL)

The Sustainable Electrochemical Systems Lab — SESL, led by Dr. Rui Gao, develops advanced materials and electrochemical processes for sustainable energy technologies. Our research focuses on the design of catalysts, membranes, and integrated electrochemical systems for CO2 conversion, hydrogen production, and related energy-conversion processes.

We aim to understand how material structure, interfacial chemistry, and transport phenomena determine electrochemical performance. By connecting fundamental chemistry with system-level optimization, SESL seeks to create efficient, scalable, and sustainable technologies that contribute to a clean and carbon-neutral energy future.

Our work is interdisciplinary, combining electrochemistry, materials chemistry, catalysis, membrane science, and process development. We welcome collaboration with researchers working in chemistry, materials science, chemical engineering, energy conversion, and sustainability.

Research Topics

Materials Design for Advanced Electrochemical Systems

We design and study functional materials for electrochemical energy conversion, including catalysts, electrodes, membranes, and hybrid material systems. A central goal is to understand structure–property relationships and use this knowledge …

Electrochemical CO2 Reduction and Carbon-Neutral Technologies

We develop materials and electrochemical strategies for the conversion of CO2 into value-added chemicals and fuels. This research supports the broader goal of building circular carbon technologies and reducing …

Hydrogen Production and Water Electrolysis

We investigate catalyst and electrode materials for efficient hydrogen generation. Our work addresses both fundamental electrochemical mechanisms and practical aspects of performance, stability, and system optimization.

Electrochemical Process Optimization and Scale-Up

Beyond materials discovery, SESL is interested in optimizing electrochemical processes under realistic operating conditions. We study how cell design, mass transport, electrolyte environment, and operating parameters influence overall system performance.
